Boulder Computer Maven Newsletter - November 2006

Dear Friends,

Thank you for letting me help you with your computer needs. This is my customer newsletter, containing information that I hope you'll find interesting and helpful.

A new version of Microsoft's Windows operating system will become available on January 30, 2007. If you buy a new computer before then, ask the vendor to give you an Express Upgrade to Windows Vista, which will let you upgrade to Windows Vista later at little or no cost. I'll include more information about Windows Vista in my January 2007 newsletter, and I'll be happy to discuss it with you at any time.

This month's topics are new releases of some other widely used programs: the Internet Explorer and Firefox web browsers, Windows Defender antispyware program, and AVG Anti-Virus Free. These releases are available for free on the Internet, and I recommend that current users of these programs install them to get the new features and improved security that they provide.

Many people use Firefox as an alternative to Microsoft's web browser. I use both, since each has useful features that the other doesn't. This Washington Post article has reviews of the browser updates.

If you currently use AVG Anti-Virus Free, you must install the updated version by January 15, 2007 to maintain your computer's virus protection.

If you don't want to receive this newsletter, let me know, and I'll remove your name from my mailing list. Previous issues are available on the newsletters page of the Boulder Computer Maven web site. If you change your E-mail address, please send me your new one.

Please call me at 303-444-8247 with questions or to schedule an appointment.

Best Wishes,
Steve Winograd

Internet Explorer 7 Web Browser Released

Microsoft has released a major update to its Internet Explorer web browser, with many improvements, including:

Microsoft is making Internet Explorer 7 available to Windows XP users, a few at a time over a period of several months, as a high-priority update through Windows Update. When your turn comes, you'll get a notice that Internet Explorer 7 is ready to install and will be asked to choose Install, Donít Install, or Ask me later.

You don't have to wait for Internet Explorer to become available through Windows Update. You can click here to download it and install it now.

Firefox 2.0 Web Browser Released

Mozilla, a global community and public benefit organization dedicated to improving the Internet experience for people everywhere, has released a major update to its Firefox web browser (click to download). Improvements include new features to make your online experience more productive, active protection from online scams, and useful add-ons to enhance your web browsing.

Windows Defender Antispyware Released

Microsoft has released the final version of its Windows Defender antispyware program (click to download), and it's available for free to anyone with a computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2. Windows Defender is so good that I've installed preliminary (Beta) versions of it for many of you to remove existing spyware infections and prevent new infections. If your computer is running Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) or Windows Defender (Beta), you can download and install the newly released version without having to uninstall the preliminary version.

AVG Anti-Virus Free 7.5 Released

Grisoft has released a new version of AVG Anti-Virus Free, and it will discontinue support for the previous version on January 15, 2007. I've installed this program for many of you because it gives reliable virus protection and is available for free to non-commercial users.

If your computer has a previous version of AVG Anti-Virus Free, it will automatically display a window labeled IMPORTANT NOTICE - DEADLINE APPROACHING, and will ask you to click where indicated to see options for upgrading to AVG Anti-Virus Professional Edition. The Professional Edition has an annual subscription fee and has more features than AVG Anti-Virus Free. Of course, you can continue to use the free product: click here to get Version 7.5 of AVG Anti-Virus Free.
